HDMI laptop to VGA television, what do I need?
So I've got a problem with my new computer and the way it shows up on my TV monitor. My old computers native resolution gave me the option to set the scale manually, which fixed the problem of I have of the edges of the screen hanging off the edge of the TV, but my new computer doesn't allow me to do this.
I've been having a look around my TV and it does seem to have options to set the screen scaling on it's 'PC' input (it's inactive on all other inputs), and as far as I can tell I can only use that by plugging my computer into the VGA port. The issue with that, however, is that my laptop doesn't have a VGA port, only HDMI.
Is there anything I can get that will take a HDMI input and a VGA output?
@Jeep man
It's not that the TV doesn't have a HDMI (it's got 2, it's less than a year old), it's that the laptop doesn't have a VGA. The issue is that the TV does not display the screen correctly on the computers native resolution when using the HDMI source because the screen hangs off (common on TV's or so I'm told), and the only way I can use the TV's custom scaling options is to use it's VGA input source.

yes it is very simple first right click your desktop and there should be an option for display settings or personalize. (if it is windows 7 or newer I haven't messed with old pc's in a while) this will allow you to set the size of the screen, I have a tv I used to use as a moniter and it couldn't do this either so I had to set the computers resolution a bit lower than the TV's because otherwise the borders would be cut off and ill tell you its a pain not knowing where your steam app is lol.
and secondly, you can buy an HDMI to VGA cord, amazon ebay, some certain places have them as well, I obtained one for my 1998 laptop via amazon and it worked great (lol I play TES ARENA and DAGGERFALL on that pc so I don't need dos box emulator) the cords are common but I'm unsure as to how long you need it, because I needed mine like 50' (long story) and I had to get a small hdmi to vga, + a 50 foot hdmi male to female input.
but yeah if you have an older pc system like windows 98 for example XD you could more than likely type in on google "how to change screen resolution for windows vista/xp/2001" etc

I know this may not be a popular thing to say but perhaps you need to consider replacing your TV. Especially if the TV is a tube CRT. The power cost alone could justify replacing the TV in just a year or two. All the newer TVs currently on the market will have HDMI. My Samsung TV (which is 5 years old) has several HDMI ports as well as a VGA port and a composite Video port.
