What's the difference between a replacement Social Security card and a new Social Security card?

I lost mine and I'd like to keep my original social security number. Do they change the number if you apply for a replacement?

There is no difference. They are both NEW CARDS. The number doesn't change. You got a card when you first applied and were assigned a number. You lost the card. You file an application for a replacement of that lost card. You get a replacement card - it looks just like the first one unless they've changed the design of the card which they sometimes do.

And btw, you are not supposed to carry your card around with you. It is an important document and should be kept at home in a safe place with other important documents and used only when needed to avoid identity theft.

SSA calls a replacement Social Security Card a Duplicate Card. It will contain your original SSN; in fact except under very unusual circumstances SSA will not let you change your SSN.

But be sure to go to the SSA website and look up form SS-5. Then be sure you have all of the ID required. SSA loves to turn people away when they really need something. Take your ID and go in to any office but be sure to look up the time the office is open on the SSA website. Today amy SSA offices are often closed. You don’t need and appointment; just your ID. And ask for a print out of your SSN. It takes a couple of weeks for your card to come in the mail but you can use SSA’s print out as soon as you leave the office.

Good luck on getting your duplicate card.

A new one must have your full legal name, including your middle name. I got a replacement card a few months ago because my original one only had my middle initial and many places wouldn't accept it.

A new one and a new replacement are exactly the same.

The other answerer is correct, your number will stay the same, but the face of the card may look different, the styles of the card change periodically.

  • Short of going into witness protection, you're never getting a new number.
