Big government is needed to take back the country from crooked corporations and plutocratic tax dodgers, to serve the People rather than the narrow interests of the wealthy.
It's delusional to think little government can fight big money and serve the People's interests.
We failed to heed Thomas Jefferson's warning. Our generation has paid a very heavy price as a result.
"I hope we shall crush in its birth the aristocracy of our monied corporations which dare already to challenge our government to a trial by strength, and bid defiance to the laws of our country." - Thomas Jefferson

Apparently it's all in how one defines "Big Government".
There are those of us who consider involvement in endless wars, in the Middle East and elsewhere, which cost our country trillions of dollars and lots of loss of life as NOT being big government, but rather, as government being prudent.
And then, there are those of us who consider spending trillions of dollars on infrastructure and social programs to benefit the masses in a way that makes the country a better place in which to live as NOT being big government, but rather, as government being prudent.
Both positions cost the tax payers BIG money. And, both positions indirectly offer a definition of Big Government ... Conservatives lean heavily on the former, but, don't consider it as being Big Government. Liberals, to include Bernie Sanders, lean heavily on the latter, but, don't consider that as being Big Government.
Personally, I have to say that the later is the more sensible use of government. I'll take spending that enhances the quality of life any day over the reckless, macho leanings of the political right that devastates the treasury and leaves the citizenry struggling to get by as the country looses its standing in the world as being the place to live if you're looking to experience the latest and the greatest of mankind's ability to produce ... Go Bernie!

Not at all. Of course, the regressives seem oddly comfortable with the Hobby Lobby telling their employees, what is covered in the health insurance the employees are paying for.
