Replace fuel filter 1991 Toyota Corolla?

I have a 1991 Corolla that runs but sometimes on the highway the engine will momentarily appear to sputter or cut out , the continues to run . The ignition parts all appear to be working and the wires are within spec. when checked for resistance .The spark plugs are good and fire . I think it needs a fuel filter replaced . The filter is low on firewall and is very hard to get to . Is there a easy way to get to the fuel filter ? I have never had a car that had the fuel filter located at such a difficult location to replace . But I had a lot of older VW diesels and those are simple .

I doubt that the fuel filter is causing the problem. You didn't mention the distributer cap and rotor. There are two gaps that have to be jumped on a distributor style ignition. One is the plug, second is the rotor to contact in the cap. If the gap becomes too great, the spark can jump through the rotor to ground.

Here is the replacement procedure. I have changed one of these, and it isn't that bad. Buy some ramps.

Whereas it certainly can't hurt anything (except your wallet) to replace the fuel filter, you should not randomly guess at problems and fire the "parts cannon" at a car.

Second, if you are confused about how to perform simple maintenance on the vehicle, you need to buy a repair/service manual, or take it to someone who knows what they are doing.

Sometimes it's easier to reach the fuel filter while the car is on a lube rack.
