Why are India and Russia allies?

India is a pro-Western and largest democratic nation in the world. It has deep economic ties with the US and EU. Russia is a anti-Western country and an ally of China, the biggest enemy of India in the region (besides Pakistan). I do not know the history between the two countries but I think the past shouldn't affect present interrsts. I don't really understand how India is benefiting from a relationship with Russia.

India and Russia have had a strong economic ties for a long time and in all actuality they have had more differences with China than with Russia. Furthermore India is pro money. wherever the money is India is. they are not necessarily pro-western they are a neutral country and does what benefits India

Russia gives India weapons. And they were pretty close under the Soviet Union.
