From the black screen background, I can guess it is a new or nearly new computer running OS 10.10 or later. Did you recently see any message about space (picture below)?

If the startup disk is full, you cannot get the computer to start, until you remove about 5GB of stuff. Unless you want to learn a whole lot about using single-user mode commands to copy files to an external drive, you can do one of these....

    – Take the computer to someone (friend or shop) who has a Mac, connect the two by Thunderbolt or Firewire cable, start your computer while holding the T key, copy files to the other Mac, trash those same files from your Mac, and empty the trash.

    – Remove the drive or storage, mount it in an enclosure, connect to another Mac, and do the copy-trash thing above. NOTE: Windows cannot see any Mac file system or delete files from the Mac drive, unless you install a third-party app, such as HFS+ For Windows---> http://www.paragon-software.com/home/hfs-windows/

If you did not ever see the warning message about space, do this....

    – Disconnect everything, except power adapter.

    – Restart while holding command and R keys for 45 seconds.

    – Select "Disk Utility".

    – Select "Macintosh HD" and the "First Aid" tab.

    – Click "Repair Disk" (NOT “Permissions”).

    – If it finds any problem, repair again.
