On the plains and in the Northern forests very few. Damn little food in the forest and no way of hunting Buffalo on the plains.
Pueblo settlements were larger (thousands) and Meso-America and the Andean cultures had populations in the millions overall.

Not many at all.
For example, in the area now known as California, there were only about six thousand natives. Some areas had larger populations, but on average it was not a largely populated content.

Since there were no censuses or similar recordings we don't have an exact number. But the estimate that I usually see quoted is about five million people living north of Mexico in 1492.

True historic fact, eh? OK, just go to the website of the Prehistoric North and South American Census Bureau and look up the census of 1490 and there's your answer.

When you need "true historic facts," the library is the place to go. You can probably get estimates, but as Brian points out, there was no census.

Impossible to say. It is not as if they had a single government that was doing a census every few years.
Easily hundreds of thousands if not millions though.
