Why do many websites have mobile versions?
Whenever I use sites like YA and YouTube, on my phone or tablet there is always a mobile site. Why do sites have this? I usually switch to Desktop Mode as it has more features. Plus, doesn't it cost more for the sites to have a mobile version?

Many sites don't want to lose their users, so they make a "light" version for users to access from their mobile devices. Mobile versions, while more limited in features, usually use less bandwidth. So they don't load up a person's system, bog down the phone, and eat up a person's data.

Its meant to be easier on the mobile device and be better formatted for a small screen. Things like phones would struggle to load regular webpages compared to mobile ones, and navigating them may not be as easy.
Its just a cleaner way to browse on small screens, it allows for the site to be more pleasant to a continuously growing population of tablet and phone users.

because many websites don't translate well from a PC setting to a mobile setting.
Most people would like their sites to be accessed easily, regardless of what the person is running.
