He admitted to homosexuality, which at the time was a criminal offense. He was only pardoned in 2013 after an internet campaign resulted in a petition to the government to have him pardoned.
While he had indeed contributed a lot to the war effort, he wasn't a celebrity or a well-known war hero, and didn't have any of the political connections or clout to get out of a legal issue like this.
