Is medical steel the same as surgical steel?

I have my helix pierced and I've found an earring that I really like on etsy.com. It says that it is made from medical steel (316 medical steel to be exact). Is this the same is surgical steel? If not, what is the difference between the two?

316 is low quality. Most jewelry on Etsy is low quality and really should be avoidable. Surgical steel that is ASTM F138 compliant or ISO 5832-1 compliant; ISO 10993-(6,10, or 11) compliant is going to be implant grade which are metals that have passed the criteria for implantation into our bodies. They are metals that scientists know our bodies get along with. Avoid 316L body jewelry.
