CA labor law: Reporting-time pay?

I showed up to work as scheduled only to find that the schedule was changed and no attempts to inform me were made. So I had to leave only to come back 6 hours later for my changed shift. I commute 50 minutes to work and it was a huge inconvenience to me. A coworker informed me of my entitlement to half a day wages as per Reporting time pay. I emailed my staffing agency supervisor about it and he said that they can only pay me based on my time stamps... What can I do about this situation?

Thank you for your answers, I'd like to add that I did report in. After I had already clocked in, I went inside the work place to start working when I was asked to leave because I wasn't supposed to be there. So my time stamps would show me clock in right at 7am as I was originally scheduled, then clock out at 7:05am just to come back and clock in at 1:30pm to start my 8 hour shift... After my review of the law I understand that im entitled to half a normal days wages on top of what I worked.

    You are entitled to reporting time if you report, and are sent home without working a shift. That is NOT what happened in this case. At BEST, you would have to prove you hadn't read the schedule wrong. Commuting distance is irrelevant.

    You probably can't be recompensed for your waste of time, but you can have the person who failed to inform you of the change of schedule disciplined, by putting in a formal grievance. And if you don't know who does the scheduling, find out from your line supervisor, or make it a general one against the Company.
