What does the word (?) "ap" mean in this sentence ....?

" Yet now he was seized by one of those temper tantrums that according to Catesby ap R. Jones were his main flaw." ??? (p.142)

The source is "A History of the Confederate Navy", written by Italian author Raimondo Luraghi, (Naval Institure Press, 1996), and throughout the book, Luraghi uses this "word" when mentioning a new historical person. I looked it up in my old-fashioned Webster's, and on-line, and I can't figure it out. Please help. And , thanks in advance. Ciao !

It is a name "Catesby ap R. Jones." He was the commander of the Confederate Navy.

'ap' is a Welsh name meaning 'son of' - like Mc or O' in Irish, or Mac or -son in Scots. It has mostly disappeared, but is the origin of some more familiar surnames, eg Powell, which comes from from ap Hywel.

"Ap" is a Welsh form, meaning "son of". Similar to "Mac" for Scottish people.
