Does anyone else get embarrassed for fictional characters in TV or movies?

I have struggled with anxiety since I was very young, and I was always an anxious child. Recently, I started watching a show that I grew up watching. In this show, there are some scenes that I literally cannot watch. I run away or mute the TV while the scene is happening, because it embarrasses me. I love this show, and I've seen every episode before, but it's been a while since I saw these episodes. I don't have an issue with reacting this way; I simply want to know if anyone else has ever reacted like this to something fictional? It could just be brilliant acting for all I know. I'm just very curious as to why I respond this way.

Not to anything fictional. Real people doing embarrassing things often gives me second-hand embarrassment. One reason why I hate watching reality TV and political debates. There's a great German word for this btw: Fremdscham. I just stumbled across a scientific study on second hand embarrassment that uses scenes from The Office as tests so it's not just you:

Yes, I'm uncomfortable with a lot of scenes where someone is embarassed or humiliated. I don't have as extreme a reaction as you but I will often mute the show, switch the channel, or fast forward if it's taped.

Yes, I do. When something embarrassing happens on screen, I often have to cover my eyes. I don't react quite as much as you do, though.

Yes, I do this too. I usually mute or just turn my eyes away from the screen.

Though the scenes are just make believe, maybe we do this because the thought of it happening in real life bothers us...but honestly, that's just a guess. I don't know why I do it.
