why are we content to live in a society where the main focus is buying products made as cheaply as possible at the expense of peoples jobs?

    Simple human motivation. If what you buy is cheaper, then you can afford to buy more. Income is limited, so purchases are a zero sum game - the more you spend on one thing, the less you can spend on something else. We can reverse your question by asking why not take a pay cut to lower prices and induce more people to buy more, thus saving jobs.
