What are some good flute solos to memorize?

Im advancing to UIL State solo and Ensemble and I have to pick a new solo and memorize it, one that is more challenging then my recent solo which was Andante in C by Mozart. I dont want a solo too difficult that i wont be able to memorize it and play it accurately, I just want something thats a step up of what Ive previously played

I was a NYSSMA adjudicator for many years. The Mozart Andante is a Level 4 - so I looked at the Level 5 listings. There are 12 Fantasies by Telemann - they are not long, written for unaccompanied flute - and you can get them for FREE, since they are public domain. I have 2 students now who both - independently - chose the Bb fantasie. You could play a Tango Etude by Astor Piazzola. There are eight short pieces by Lowell Lieberman - and three preludes by the American composer Robert Muczynski. There is a great work by Rhonda Larson called Movin' On - lots of fun, but a bit longer that the others. The Katherine Hoover piece Kokopeli is a favorite - and also a workable length for you. I keep thinking of other things - outside the NYSSMA list, too, so I have to think about length and difficulty - and many I love are getting too long to think of you memorizing. If you want to go "old school" - the a minor partita of Bach, and the a minor sonata of his son CPE Bach. Let me know if these are TOO big a step up - and I can advise about others that are not as long or challenging - but you DID say you wanted to go a step up. Really - your best sources of advice is your own private flute teacher - your band director probably does not know flute literature well (so few of them are flutists.) Good luck - I will check back in a while to see if you wrote any more.
