My internet varies from 1.5 to 6 mbps, why?

Some days my internet is 1.5 Mbps and some days my internet is 6-7 Mbps. I speed test every few days at the same time of day, I m not downloading anything and when I reset my router the speed goes up by .5mbps for little bit and goes back to normal. Why does it go between 1.5 and 6 Mbps?

If you have a Dedicated Subscriber Line (DSL) from the telephone company, have a talk with customer service.

If you have a Cable Internet (from the TV cable company) you problem is that there are too many Cable subscribers on the line at various times.

Like after school, or when people get out of work and log on to their Cable Internet. The more people sharing the cable the slower things get.

When Cable advertises their speeds being greater than DSL they mean when only one person is connected. As each person joins the speed goes slower, that is why the say, "Up to" in the ads.

Loose wires, Virus/Malware, and if using a WiFi (interference* by microwaves) may also affect the connection.

    * Mobile Phones, Microwave ovens, etc.)
