Do you think Wallis Simpson and Edward should have been taken care by the Crown from Duke/Dutchess term ,to money living in France?

In a way The Duke and Duchess were taken care of by the Crown. His brother, Albert, as King George VI, gave him a generous allowance to live in France and it was on condition, that he didn't return to the U.K without an invitation to do so.

An interesting question.

When Edward acceded to the throne Simpson was still married and she and Edward were having an affair. Edward expressed a desire to marry her once her divorce was absolute.

As Edward, on becoming King was automatically the Head of the Church of England (CofE) he was told that he could not marry a divorcee and she could not become Queen.

Edward put forward another proposal of a morganatic marriage, which meant he could marry Simpson but she would not become Queen and any children they had could not accede to the throne.

This was rejected so in order to marry Simpson he decided to abdicate.

This left a sour taste in the mouths of the other Royals and the CofE, especially his younger brother Albert Frederick Arthur George Windsor who reluctantly was forced into becoming King, taking the title George VI. Albert never wanted to be King.

After this Edward and Simpson decided to leave Britain and live in France.

They got married but the Royal Family could never forgive him for what he had done.

Parliament along with the Royals decided that if Edward would not fulfil his obligations then the British people should not be expected to provide him with an income from their taxes.

I personally agree with the decision because he turned his back on his family and his nation and the Commonwealth and their subjects.

He and Simpson became very friendly with Hitler and this alienated him even more with his subjects and his family.

The Queen did visit him shortly before his death basically as an act of reconciliation.

They were. George VI paid him quite well enough for Balmoral and Sandringham and the Government gave him a cushy job in the Bahamas. Not bad considering he married a foreign peasant.

Edward told his brother george that he had no money shortly before he left the country, in fact he had the sum of ( in today's money) about 10 million pounds, george paid him a pension for years, privately.

No Edward had plenty of his own money.
