A new corporation with a question on Form 1120?

I just formed a corporation on January 25, and now I got a letter from the IRS saying I need to file a Form 1120. But the form's for 2015, and we weren't even started yet! Should I just fill it in with 0's, since at that time there were no assets or debits?

    When did you incorporate?

If the corporation was in existence in 2015 with either shareholders, assets or sales, you need to file.

Look at your copy of the SS-4, what did you put in box 11?

UPDATE: according to you, you did everything in January 2016, including filing for the EIN. Look at the CP575 letter (the confirmation for the EIN) and if says you incorporated in 2015, call or write back (with a copy of the letter) that they have the date wrong. Otherwise the IRS will keep expecting the 1120.

FWIW, the 575 letters often print amazingly bad filing instructions. They are among the worst letters the IRS sends out. I've seen them say MUST when it was really *should* as well as impossible due dates.

Respond that no return is due because corporation was not in business

Thanks. I have a law degree and I STILL couldn't understand why they were wanting this--I guess stupidity is still the best explanation for why people (or governments) do anything.
