Should I go to the doctor?
I can tell that I have some fluid in my left ear that is being blocked by the eustachian tube, which is closed because of my allergies. It s only hurt a little, and only in isolated moments over the past three days (it was always a dull pain), but the thought of an infection scares me. I started taking an antihistamine/decongestant today that hopefully should help a little, I ve been chewing a lot of gum, sleeping in the best positions for drainage, keeping my head upright, etc., but none of it seems to have helped yet. I leave in 5 days for a two week trip that I ve had plans for months. I d go to the doc, but the flu is going around and that would put me at a great risk of getting around, which would be even worse than an ear infection. Should I try to go to the doctor? Should I call and try to get a prescription for an antibiotic (I don t know if that can be done, just asking)? I can t miss this trip.

Definitely see a doc so you don't mess up your trip. Don't call to get an antibiotic - that might not be the appropriate treatment. A doc might be reluctant to do this without seeing you unless you have a history with this particular problem. Go to a walk-in clinic today to allow enough time before the trip to get rid of the ear problem.
