Space is really freaking big. A real space trip takes days just to go to the moon or months to get to Mars or Venus. It will take years if you wish to travel even further in the solar system. To travel between the stars could take longer than recorded human history and to travel between galaxies could take longer than the timeline of mammalian life on Earth.

For that reason it's not really something that easily compresses down into a video experience! There are however some attempts in both science fiction and real science documentaries to try and give some feel to the wonder and vastness of space.

A quick youtube link I can throw up is the opening 3 minutes from the 1997 film "Contact". It's something of a love it or hate it kind of movie, but the opening sequence is fantastic. It's a slow zoom out from Earth to the edge of the known universe. It's reminiscent of a much earlier science film called "Powers of 10" which may be lurking on Youtube somewhere, but Contact was made just as CGI was coming of age and is put to good use here.

I'll come out and say it bluntly but despite most of the film "2001: A Space Odyssey" being a tedious cinematic plod, there are some truly amazing sequences that make you think about the vastness and mystery of the universe, and is certainly one of those films everyone should see at least once if only for the art direction.

As for journeys through space try the first episode of Cosmos. It was made 36 years ago but that opening journey in the ship of the imagination still sends shivers down my spine. Maybe it's partly because of some fabulous Vangelis music, or perhaps it's just Carl Sagan could lead the ingredients list of a cereal box and still make it sound epic, but it's one of the most memorable tv sequences for me. There are copies on Youtube but there's been some copyright massacring carried out on the audio which is annoying.

Try watching the news some time. That's enough to make anyone want to escape the planet.

    Cheers!
