Why is the federal government against legalizing marijuana (medicinal and recreational)?

I can't really find a clear explanation why ! Glad if someone can answer..thank you!!

    Medicinal and recreational - it is the EXACT SAME stuff. Only the application is different. There is scientific proof that it is dangerous, damaging, addicting and kills brain cells. Only an incompetent government would condone its use for anything other than cancer patients who are dire need. Those people who deny the scientific facts - it is too late for them. Too many brain cells have already been fried.

    This article traces it back to the beginning when it became illegal in the first place. Add: the biggest hurdle today would be big pharma as they fear loosing profits.
