I have a good sized garden, and usually have great luck with scattering lady-bugs and praying mantis around the area. They will eat insects that threaten your veggies. Snails and slug are easily taken care of by putting down a line of snail/slug killer around the parimiter of your garden. I use COREY'S brand. It's very effective, and safe to use.

Pick them off as you see them. Look for their presence by the green trails they leave behind. Your cabbages will not be damaged if you find them before they chew through to the insides, you will have chemical free cabbage and you will have learned something. Always avoid chemical usage if possible because it is not only bad for you but for the soil, animals, & the groundwater supply.

Spray them with soapy water.
