it is good to learn 1 striking or grappling art as your base and have enough experience with the other so that it is not your weakness. so a bit of both actually. i agree with bruce lee's saying that you should fear not the guy who practices 10,000 kicks once but the guy who practiced one kick 10,000 times. that being said if you took his advice literally and only practiced one kick 10,000 times and never learned how to punch or grapple, it would not take long to find someone who would hand your @$$ to you. you need to be "well rounded" so that you know how to punch kick and grapple. but you do not need to know every martial art on earth to know how to do that.

I agree with Cornelius there and its better to focus on one art and developing a strong base and ability in that first. Then you can later add something else to that which contrasts and also compliments it but yet still have that first one to fall back on and use. Boxing is a little unique in that you are only learning to use your hands and punching and so you can really develop some good skills in three years under a good coach. With something like karate you really are talking about a longer time frame because of the kicking and striking aspects along with those punching aspects that are taught. Several years then are needed really for that and even then that might not be long enough based on the quality of the training and sparring.
The above being said a person can develop some pretty good stand up skills in boxing in three years and then take up some ground or grappling type art to compliment their skills and ability and train in that for 5-7 years and have some formidable skills with only ten years of training. That sounds like a long time but really isn't when you consider that a person basically has their entire life to study, train, and develop themselves. It only takes dedication, hard work, and good instruction or good coaching.

it depends on what your goal is. if you wanna be a professional fighter then youll do better if you have a strong base. wrestling seems to be the most successful base in the ufc at the moment. however if your goal is just to get effective as fast as possible, youll get better results by learning certain things from every martial art, sort of like what the military does to get their soldiers combat ready. but take that with a grain of salt because soldiers dont really need to be good at hand to hand combat. most knife fights between two soldiers just turn into a stab fest which doesnt involve many techniques, at least thats what i gathered by watching a weird reality show on youtube where two soldiers from different armies compete with shock knives they also do other competitions. i cant remember what it was called though.

Martial arts is not about fitness. Fitness may be a by-product, but the goal of any martial arts is to develop self-defense skills.
If your goal for fitness was to be a runner, then you should join a runner's club. Or a biker's club, if you wanted to bike. Or tennis... and so on.
If your goal was to be a boxer, then you should join a boxing gym. (Or a wrestling gym, or muay thai, or wrestling, or taekwondo, etc)
If your goal is to develop self-defense skills, fitness gyms won't help you directly. Take up self-defense with a reputable instructor, no matter the style. Likewise, if you are serious about fitness, get a good personal trainer.
