Public car auctions (those that are open to the general public) are the worst possible places to buy a used car.

Sure, you'll get a cheap car but you'll also get a defective car that will need work.

Think about it. Dealers sell used car. They buy their cars from two places, trade ins and dealer only closed auctions. They keep the good trade ins, the sell the decent ones they don't want at the dealer auctions and the rest of the crap gets sold out the back door to independent dealers. Once those independent dealers have the car they try to sell it, if they can't they send it to the public auction. So the public auction gets the worst of the worst. The cars nobody can sell, the cars nobody else wants.

The northeast is a large reason especially since you're factoring Pennsylvania.

Care to be more specific? Where are you and how far out do you want to look? I know of several auctions. Hell, there's one about two miles from my house. It's about 3-400 miles from northeastern PA, but hey, it's in the northeast US.

You're thinking of the Manheim auction... and it's dealer-only.

There are a few around Harrisburg that have a public night.
