The horsepower of the car's engine and the size of the trailer are irrelevant.
The flat 4 wire plug is pretty much universal for a basic trailer tail light set up.
I would start by asking a friend or neighbor to hook your trailer to their car. If the trailer lights work perfectly on another car then you know there's no problem with the trailer and the problem is with the wires on your car. If the trailer lights don't work then you can be pretty sure the problem is the trailer if the car you use works with other trailers.
Frankly if you're certain that the problem is the car then its time to demand a refund and take the car to another shop for wiring. Professionals who install hitches should get the wiring right the first time 999 times out of 1,000. If you happen to be that one in a thousand time that they goof up and make a mistake they should get it right the first time you come back and compensate you for your time & hassle by refunding your original fee.

Buy an inexpensive multi meter and check the voltage at the harness with brake depressed and tail lights on. If you have power there then check the ground on the trailer. You shouldn't depend on the hitch acting as a ground. There should be a wire from the trailer's side of the harness to ground on the trailer.

May I suggest you take the trailer and the car to the people that did the wiring. There is to many different things you say for me to help you here. I'm not even sure if your talking about the clearance lights, brake lights or the turn signals.
