Any genetic condition has a far higher chance of being inherited if the parents are related to one another if it is in the family at all. In addition a recessive gene is only going to be expressed if it is on both sides so there are two different types of risk.

There are many heritable eye disorders which can cause blindness. There are thousands of different inherited mental and physical conditions that create disabilities; look at what happened in the west of Ireland after it was depopulated by migration and famine. Almost every family had disabilities and alcoholism was rampant.

It only takes a couple of generations of cousin marriages before you have almost no chance of producing normal healthy children.
