The risk of suicide is greater for those who have eating disorders than any other disorder. However, it is extremely hard to convince someone who suffers from this disorder to seek treatment. From your experience or from what you have read, how do we encourage those individuals with eating disorders to seek treatment.

You force them to seek treatment. They'll be super unhappy and depressed and they'll cry and get mad but they will get better. I'm 13, I used to have anorexia, but now my parents have forced me to go to counselling and they are forcing me to gain weight. I am so unhappy and I am crying constantly. I hate it so much. But I'm gaining weight, eating more, and getting better. Actually, I think my suicidal thoughts are a lot worse from treatment and I used to be a lot happier when I had my disorder. But the bottom line is that you can't convince people with eating disorders to seek treatment; you HAVE to FORCE them. It's the only way they'll get better.

As with any addiction you can't convince a person to get treatment, they have to realize they have a problem and seek treatment on their own. BTW with the state of our mental health system it's nearly impossible to find a good Dr. who can deal with this situation, it's also very expensive.

Education to allow those with the disorder to self identify and realize that life doesn't have to be this way with help.
