Collar first, and then lead. If you get one of the soft puppy sets, attach the collar when the puppy is playing so hopefully he doesn't pay too much attention to this strange thing round his neck. I'd not leave it on 24/7 however. Once he's reasonably comfortable to be wearing a collar, then you attach the lead and making sure it doesn't get caught, let him run around with it on. Do NOT do any pulling or tugging at this point. You move on to picking up the lead, and following him so he gets used to having you next to him. The mext move is to encourage him to go with you instead of you with him. You can do this outside in your back garden until he's had all his shots. Once that's completed, take him out front to the kerb so he can start to get used to the big outside world, traffic and passing people. Don't try to force anything or you'll have a lead-shy dog on your hands. Most dogs enjoy the bigger world, but you must take it slowly and if you get anything that shows he's worried, end the session. It might be good to be able to take him off to a park (NOT a dog park), somewhere quiet so he can wander around. But obviously not until he's finished his vaccination shots - all of them.

This can all begin from day one, although it might be best not to 'hit' him with too much all at once. After he comes home, the first thing to be done, within the first 48 hours (I prefer to leave a day between coming home and doing this) is taking him to your own vet for a health check, worming if needed, and vaccination to begin. Take any medical history yu have been given with you.

As soon as it comes into your household at 8 weeks old.

Lessons should be short (3-4 minutes)and often. (3-4 times daily) until the pup is a bit older and walking calmly on the lead.

Then you start teaching it to walk to heel and not pull on the lead.

As soon as it can walk, you should leash train it. So it gets used to it more.

All training begins the moment you bring it home.
