We have an old Brother MSC5860CN Multi function machine and plan to try to use it soon. How can it work without a phone jack?

By the part number this is a Color Network printer, scanner, copier. That means that you can find the Brother software to make it your network printer and use either the embedded of 3rd party software to scan to PDF.

We can send and receive faxes on the line and we have a customer that used it as his fax solution to actually have a fax machine via cable modem.
