We have an old Brother MSC5860CN Multi function machine and plan to try to use it soon. How can it work without a phone jack?

( we will not have a phone land line in our future home, so can it work somehow through on Time Warner Cable internet? The cable line is in the new place already.?

By the part number this is a Color Network printer, scanner, copier. That means that you can find the Brother software to make it your network printer and use either the embedded of 3rd party software to scan to PDF.

There are several offerings for fax to email or electronic fax software. I happen to be grandfathered for maxemail, that costs me about $40 a year. I send about 10 fax pages a year, as I scan and send by email for most of my applications. You can find a good value, like nextiva, but choose your plan carefully based on what you are trying to do. As a casual user, you can get a $3.95 a month plan, or even, perhaps the "free" efax account for very limited faxing that will deliver inbound faxes via email. One other thing you might look into is an alternative phone service. I have phonepower (the phonepower/broadvoice solution) that costs me $14.08 a month for two phone lines. We can send and receive faxes on the line and we have a customer that used it as his fax solution to actually have a fax machine via cable modem.
