These men ( and a few, though not many, women, too) are called outriders, and have been described as the "best friends that a jockey or exercise rider ever had or will have." Outriders are EXPERT horsemen and women. They have to be- THEIR LIVES, and the lives of the people they serve, DEPEND ON their skills in the saddle and their overall horsemanship abilities. Outriders do a lot more than just lead post parades and catch loose or injured horses. They are responsible for the safety of every mounted rider on the track, regardless of what that rider is doing or what his or her position is. Some of them also act as eyes and ears for the racing stewards as well, and keep watch for rule violations or evidence of suspicious or dangerous behavior on the part of any jockey, trainer, or groom. If a horse is acting abnormally on the track or in the paddock, the outriders are often the first to know, and as such, they are the first line of defense against dangerous situations.

Outriders are easily identifiable at most tracks. They wear coats or body protectors which are either scarlet or green, depending on the individual track. They also carry radios, and at many tracks, at least one of them will have a camera mounted on his or her helmet. Outriders carry lead shanks and small first aid kits as well. The horses they ride are usually Thoroughbreds or predominantly of that ancestry.
