Can anyone suggest any recreational place to visit between Sydney and Melbourne?

I have family friends in Sydney and we decided to meet halfway between Sydney and Melbourne. We got children of ages between 4 to 9 yrs old.

Another challenge could be weather because it will be mid of May.

So, please, suggest any place which should be scenic, relaxing, and appropriate for cold or windy days.

Update:

Update: Thanks heaps everyone. So, we are considering Albury and Lake Hume, the inland option because the weather will windy and cold on most of the towns by Princess Highway. So, we took the option of Hume Highway. Now, please suggest me about Albury and Lake Hume.

I agree with the Princess Highway answer, I have been to Eden, liked it and the surroundings.

I don't think 4 to 9 year olds would have much interest for War Memorials, Museums, or Parliament House

actually I agree with the suggestion of Canberra

reason being there are so many museums and galleries that children would benefit from experiencing plus if the weather is bad it is perfect

all galleries have cafes where the parents can relax

apart from galleries the nations capital has a lot to see and good to do it with the children before they turn into stroppy moody difficult teenagers

particular mention of the science museum and the dinosaur museum

the link I put up for you has lots and lots of places would be ideal

Ballarat and Wollongong. Other great choices are Jindabyne and Cooma.

I also agree with Eden, Merimbula or Bermugui. Merimbula is probably the best option.
