Actually Ray Kroc didn't start McDonalds. He bought the first one from the people who did. Then he expanded it into a chain.
He was selling mixers - for milkshakes - at the time. When the McDonalds brothers bought five of them. I believe those particular models mixed five shakes at a time. That's 25 shakes at once. Krock had to see what was going on there and took a trip to the Sam Bernardino burger joint. He was shocked by the huge volume of business it was doing. So he bought it* and the rest is history.
*Actually he became a "franchise agent" for them. It wasn't until later that he became sole owner.

The oldest McDonald's still in operation is the third-ever franchise, located in Downey, California. I think it's the only McDonald's in the country that doesn't have Ronald McDonald as its mascot; they use McDonald's original mascot named "Speedy", sort of a stick figure with a hamburger for a head.
There's also sort of a "museum", but it's pretty much just a few display cases of vintage McDonald's memorabilia and equipment. It's worth a visit if you're in the area.
