Should white people describe black people as "black"?

African-American sounds like something a middle aged rich person would say so they don t feel uncomfortable lol... but which is better for white people to say, "Black" or "African American"?

Both these labels were insisted upon by black activists in the 60's. They hated the word *****, which means black, and substituted the word black instead. I suppose they thought that with a new name they wouldn't be hated as much. Others wanted to break away from color identification. Since most blacks here came from

West Africa, they settled on African American, in the same way that second generation Irish people are called Irish American. The problem is that not every black here came from Africa.

The changing of labels reflects deep anxiety about identity.

I prefer to say black, not all blacks come from Africa in the last two centuries - if ever, and if a white person fled the end of apartheid and became a US citizen would they also not be African American?

It's technically incorrect as most black people are actually brown and most white people are actually pink.
