Chinese and Russian visas?
I'm planning for a RTW trip next year, and I've never traveled to a country that needed a visa so I'm a little confused on how to go about acquiring one. I've been told that I need to go to the country's embassy to obtain one, but through my research I've found that there are companies that will take care of the process. The websites usually seem a little shady, but all of them checked out okay when I did further research. Is hiring one of these companies the best way to go about doing thing? I'm not rich, and I'd like most of my money to go into the actual trip, so if anyone knows a cheaper method I'd much appreciate it.

I can only speak of China, as I have no experience with Russia.
You can either go to the Chinese Embassy yourself (and you must use a specific one depending on your state of residency) or hire someone to do it for you. Since I do not live near an Embassy, I have always used an agent. Even if I did live near an Embassy, I likely would use an agency anyhow.
I have used MyChinaVisa twice, I forget the other I used prior to that. I have never had trouble though. I think they may service other countries as well, so if you could get one agency that could do both visas that would be beneficial for you.

Why pay someone to do what you can do yourself? The web sites for the embassies and consulates will tell you if you need a visa and how to get it.
