Extremely irregular periods...advise?

I started my period at 14. Was put on bc at 16 to regulate cycles, but stopped taking it at 17. Periods returned to 3 or 4 times per year; nonetheless had my first child at 20. I then went back on the pill for 3 years. I'm 27 now and have been off bc for 2+years-still only 2-4 per year. When I see my family doc and/or gyn, they tell me it's fine because I've always been this way. The only reason they can give me is that I have low progesterone levels. So every 3 months or so they can give me Provera..it is linked to breast cancer when used often, so I just as soon not take it. The problem is that my husband and I have been ttc for 2 years now and nothing. Any advice or experiences would be appreciated. Ty in advance

You need to find competent doctors.

Hormonal birth control will not and cannot regular cycles - that is biologically impossible, the whole purpose of this form of birth control is to completely stop your cycles so that you don't ovulate and thus you also don't menstruate (bleeding experiences on the pill is a withdrawal bleed caused by the drop in synthetic hormones on the week break it is not the same a regular menstruation by any means). Hormonal birth control use during teens may have long-term implications on reproductive health, at very least it means you've gone over a decade without anyone investigating the cause of your irregular cycles and offering real treatment methods.

If your doctors are just giving you bandaids like hormonal birth control and saying it's fine (it's not - the menstrual cycle is an indication of health so as well as fertility issues they're ignoring something that could be a side-effect of something bigger) then they're not just useless but frankly they're denying you health care. Research a little yourself, but you need to find better doctors - either change doctors or push to see specialists.

I agree 👍 with the other answer and was going to write 📝 something similar anyway
