Did I handle this annoying person right?

Last year I discovered I needed reading glasses. I had the prescription and was picking out frames. I have always told myself, ever since I was a young boy, that if I needed glasses I would get rectangle ones. I found the perfect pair - they were black, plastic rectangular ones, exactly what I had been searching for.

I went to the desk to go have them made and the optician asked me if I really wanted those ones, wouldn't I consider choosing another pair? He kept saying I needed a large round pair. I HATE round eyeglasses with a passion, so I told him no, thank you. He kept trying to push me into buying large round hipster eyeglasses. I politely, but assertively told him that I was not fussy about having to buy eyeglasses in the first place, and that I would be going with the rectangular ones because that's what I wanted and I thought they looked good on me. Finally he backed off.

Did I handle the pushy optician well? Even though I was annoyed & frustrated by him trying to make me buy glasses I didn't want, I remained clam, and didn't get snippy or use bad language.

Update:

I mean calm, not clam

They are your glasses, you are paying for them, you have to wear them and it is entirely your choice. If any optician tried such a thing on me I would take my prescription somewhere else where I would be treated properly. In the circumstances you describe I would probably use "bad language" and would tell the optician where he could put his round glasses.

No, you got good practice in being assertive but not obnoxious. Eyeglass frames are part of your personal appearance that you can control, yourself. If they turn out to be a poor choice, that can be corrected by spending some more money.

It is easier for most opticians to cut the lenses round. They come in large round discs first off so it is easier to just cut the lens round. It take a lot more skill and precision to make the prescription into rectangles.

I would have asked him why he thought that the round ones would be better, if there was some reason other than cosmetic that a round lens would work better with your prescription. At least to see what his reason was, other than cosmetic. I have progressive trifocals myself, and the shape of the lens (for me) will mean that the reading portion at the bottom of the lenses will be smaller with narrower, squared off frames.

Wouldn't it be great if sales people would stop trying to up sell everything and just give us what we asked for. You did nothing wrong.

You checked all the boxes. You were assertive and direct, stated your intention clearly and you choose not to engage in aggressive, impolite behavior. Well done you!

as long as you remain clam. This other clam i know doesn't, just turns into a completely different animal when he gets frustrated.
