Not ALL Gsd`s show territorial behavior or bark at strangers.

A good Gsd will not bark without GOOD reason.

Most Gsd`s will bark at something they consider a threat by the time they are a year old but some not until full maturity which can be from 2-3 years old.

Do NOT expect your Gsd to ever protect you if you are physically attacked.

Only dogs with the correct temperament and drives and strong nerves are who are professionally trained to disable an attacker will perform this job reliably.

Most run of the mill Gsd`s will bark a warning but will back off if threatened.

Barking , nipping and running round a person in circles is NOT protection.

But a nervous barking dog "can" be a visual deterrent to some trouble makers.

Often.......its the quiet ones that you need to watch out for....and not the obviously nervous hysterical barking at all and sundry type.

Puppies should never be protective whatever the breed. They are the babies in the den site, and it is the job of the adults to protect and raise *them.

Dogs dont start working until they are at least 18 months old as that is when they become adults.

But no one uses a dog for guarding if it is untrained. Start his training now. He needs to learn to tolerate strangers in the home, and to be safe and under control.

Usually around 12-18 months or so- once they are close to physical maturity. That's assuming you got one with a decent temperament.

He is NOT being protective he is being afraid and it is your job to give him more confidence and let him know that you are in control of everything and he can leave it to you.

No dog should be wary of strangers coming into the home. You will end up with a dog that bites someone and loses their life because of it.
