Period PTO???

I wasn't sure which category to put this under. Please move it to a more suitable category if you feel there is one it fits better in.

I saw an article this morning that said a company in the UK is talking about giving women special paid time off when they are on their periods.

I found this quite offensive, and was basically attacked for sharing that thought. IMO, it is regression. Women have fought for equal rights and have demanded equal treatment in the workplace, but now they want special treatment because of their periods??

I understand SOME women may have very painful periods, but, IMO, in those times they should use sick pay or regular PTO, if needed. And should also see their doctor for treatment.

Thoughts? Opinions?

Update:

For clarification, this is about Paid Time Off work specifically set aside for when woman is on her period. This isn't just calling into work and taking a sick day or taking a vacation day. This is calling into work and saying, "I need to take a period day" and being paid for it out of the Period PTO bank.

    Yes, I absolutely agree.

This is nothing but female entitlement at its best. "I wont work as hard as men, as long as men, but I dare you to pay me a cent less than any man!" - that is their attitude.

These women are so entitled and full of themselves, that they think anyone who speaks up against special treatment and privileges for women is being a "misogynist, woman hater".

I agree that women who have particularly painful periods should use their regular sick leaves. I am not being unempathetic in saying so because a woman who has incredibly painful periods must have something wrong with her - be it uterine fibroids, adenomyosis or endometriosis. Its certainly pathological and not normal, which means that having painful periods has more to do with them being sick, than being an intrinsically female trait. Giving ALL women free PAID time off during their periods is ridiculous.

And yes, I believe you did place this question in the right category (Gender Studies).

Wait, are you saying that women should be treated the same as Men? Now, that's an idea that neither Democratic Primary candidates can agree with since they believe women are "oppressed" still and need special treatment. Trump might agree to that though.

I do find that ridiculous, but remember that other countries are looking for more and more reasons to have people NOT working since it has been proving that working too much causes all sorts of disease and mental health concerns.

Honestly, it sounds like this policy is good for women, but it's more for the men. Women have a hard time being productive when they are uncomfortable, so work can get behind or be done wrong if they can't teach themselves to focus and put their feelings and comfort aside to be a business professional. And when work is done wrong, it causes rework; forcing people to miss their deadlines or to overlook an error until months down the line. So this is a good thing, but honestly it is not treating women equal to men (probably because in many ways they can't be - men don't bleed every month so....)

I realize some women have debilitating menstrual-related conditions. But it should not be the company's responsibility to pay her for time at home with this. We all have conditions we deal with-- from the bum knee to IBS. From severe seasonal allergies to migraines. And none of these conditions is given special paid time off. We all learn to manage these conditions through a combination of treatments and learning to best use of our personal PTO time. But this policy flies in the face of all of us who detest the idea that we're weak because of periods, or that menstruation is an illness. This takes us back to the days of menstrual isolation-- the red tents. Likewise, this policy would make women less desirable as employees. This is a step backward, not forward.

    I agree with you.

I have extremely painful and debilitating periods. But that's not because I'm a woman. It's because I have severe hormonal issues that isn't normal , and for which I have visited several doctors and specialists and presented all medical records necessary just like any other illness.

Women haven't evolved to be cripples who can't work for a week every month. That's just not the norm. If it were, then how can we claim to be equal?

I am against it even though I'm one of those unfortunate individuals who get severe painful cramps and mood swings. If it's too much, you can always go to the doctor and take a day off. It's a sick leave.

Women should receive paid time off for their periods when they absolutely need it.

Could you imagine the abuse? Could you imagine the oversight extremes to curb the abuse (i.e. "When was your last period?" "Did you eat anything gassy this morning?" "SPOT CHECK!").

I can't see how anyone at that company would hire any women if that were to happen. Productivity would be guaranteed to rise as more and more male employees were hired.

Menstruation can be a serious medical condition. What do you have against women getting time off for medical conditions.
