A pitcher qualifies for a save if he 1) enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for at least one inning or, 2) he enters the game, regardless of the score, with the potential tying run either on base, at bat, or on deck or, 3) he pitches for at least three innings.

You take the mound with the lead, your team is leading by two or less or your team is leading by more yet the tying run is on deck when you take the mound, and you finish off the game without giving up or allowing the tying run to score.
