Writing a book set in 1830 America. Anything on suturing and medicine for stab wounds then?

    Stab wounds to the extremities could be sewn fairly well, with the ever present danger of infection. Stab wounds to the abdomen were almost always fatal. Surgeons knew how to open the abdomen and repair damaged tissue, but without anesthesia such surgery was unthinkable.
