Host gift for an Austrian?
I'm from the United States and am studying abroad in Austria for four weeks, and it is expected that we bring our host family a gift. I know nothing about my host family, nor do I know how many members are in the family.
The gift can't be too big or fragile, as it could break in my suitecase during the flight. I thought about getting a candle, but it seems a tad impersonal.
Maybe there's something that we have in the United States that they don't have in Austria that my host family might like? Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

Something very American is fun. For a child maybe a pencil with a little yellow taxi at the top. For an adult maybe a note pad made of fake dollar bills? I find chocolate chips popular too.

You want to bring them something unique & local as a memento of your stay with them. E.g. if you're from Vermont, bring a Vermont, take a Vermont Teddy Bear. If you are from Eden, NY, area, bring a Kazoo from the world's ONLY metal kazoo-maker.
What's unique in your area? Go to your local historical society. There are likely to be books about your local history, or art works/photography by a local artist. Your local reference librarian likely knows of something unique or special about your town/city. National park nearby? The park visitor center likely has something about the park which is not readily available elsewhere, e.g. I recently saw jigsaw puzzles using photos of park landmarks at one. Your local bookstore probably has something about your locality, too.
Do NOT bring something silly, trashy, disposable. The family would love to have a book about your town to display to their friends & family which tells more about you & your background, hometown. Or pro photo or art of local landmark. And you can probably find something nice they will treasure for under $50, probably under $25.

A signed picture of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Austria's favourite son (and their only claim to 'fame'... well, apart from Hitler of course).
