A question on matrices algebra 2?

can you find a non zero two by two matrix A such as AB =BA for any two by two matrix b can you explain what their asking

    would be a 2 X 2 zero matrix. the product of it with any other 2 X 2 matrix would be the same 2 X 2 zero matrix.

    They are asking you to find an identity matrix ... like in regular math 1 is the multiplicative identity because 1 X a = a X 1 = a.

    The mult. identity 2 X 2 matrix is

    | 1 0 |

    | 0 1 |

    try multiplying by any other 2 X 2 matrix and you will see that the answer will be the original matrix.

    The identity matrix works, as will any constant times the identity matrix. I think those might be the only ones. You could try to prove that.

    They are asking about what matrices commute with any other matrix.
