Are there any tips to improving the sound on my new TV?

I finally broke down a bought a High-def TV. The picture is incredible, but the sound seems like it is coming through a string attached to a tin can. I've monkeyed with the equalizer settings a bit, but it didn't seem to help. The TV is a Magnavox 40-inch. Any thoughts?

Usually any TV comes with shitty sound system. Try to get a soundbar, around $100 for a good one, it will improve your sound by 100% and still using small space/

    Use an external audio system.

Modern TVs have very little space for speakers,

which severely limits the sound quality they can achieve.

Magnavox is pretty low end. And like most flat-panels the speakers are mounted on the BACK of the TV reflecting down or backwards.

I strongly recommend a soundbar. These at least point the speakers towards you.
