A friend had a similar, but opposite problem on an old laptop from 2009. It would play CDs, but not DVDs. I believe a different laser is used for each, since a DVD has much more storage than a CD.

So like Luke Watson says, I ordered her the same model DVD drive from Amazon. A single screw is removed from the bottom of the laptop to remove the drive. Although, she is old and had trouble with the tiny screws trying to the bracket for that single screw to the new drive, so she just plugged the new drive in without securing it and it works.

Try a different cd of that still doesn't work then the cd drive could be bad. If your laptop is under warranty contact the manufacturer and request to have it repaired.

if it is not under warranty its just as easy as typing you laptop model number in Amazon and buying a new dvd drive as long as your ok taking a screwdriver to your laptop.

By the way I still use CDs I have a cupboard full of them and cassette tapes.

My Countrymen still use CDs so no big deal for me.

Use VLC Player instead, also trying copying the media into your local HD and try to play it from there.

If possible, update your graphics and sound drivers.

What files are you trying to open?

If songs, change the default application

If you still have the same issue, try playing that CD in other computer. You'll come to know if its really issue with CD

Try running a cleaning disk in the drive. You can pick 'em up in many computer & electronic places. That may be all it needs.

Even if it isn't, you'll have done no harm, only good.
