Crisco is simply a brand name. The product is coagulated vegetable oils and resembles lard. It has a greasy texture, but melts easily and is used in everything from baking to seasoning an iron skillet.

Well, traditionally, baked goods were referred to as "short" if they were rich and high in fat. Shortbread and shortcakes are "short" in the sense that they are full of butter. Shortcrust is short with lard or butter. The phrase 'vegetable shortening' is a back-formation from short, so it means fat from vegetable sources.
