Is there a tracing paper used for sewing that doesn't smudge?

The traditional method of "tracing" a pattern is to use a pouncing wheel that puts holes in the pattern at millimeter or fraction inch intervals and then a pouncing bag with fine chalk in it is used to put spots on the fabric for cutting. I would expect that a tracing carbon that did not smudge would also be permanent enough as to leave stains behind when done.
