You might be referring to the alleged sinking of a Japanese mini Sub near Pearl Harbour hours before the Japan attack. That's more firing the first shot though. Hard to call it an attack when you are defending your Harbour by shooting at submarines coming thousands of miles to attack you.

But in general no, The Pearl Harbour attack was the start.

Not through war fare. The US had imposed embargoes on Japan hurting them economically. This had angered Japan greatly because one of the embargos was on oil, oil was crucial to Japan s war campaign in China. Because the US was bound to get into the War eventually Japan had though it would be best to get the first blow by attacking the US Pacific fleet. When doing this US had a reason to enter the war.

No. However, that oil embargo was one of the factors that caused Japan to attack Pearl Harbour.

Only if you consider the US embargoes of oil, iron(ore/scrap), and nickel and the freezing of their assets in the US as an attack on Japan. Otherwise, no. Thanx.

The US attacked Japan on an economic basis. We refused to sell items to them that they needed because we didn't like that they invaded China and Korea. They saw these embargoes as an act of war so they attacked.

We didn't attack Japan first. We embargoed materials they need, and they were pissed. So they attacked us in response to our blockade of refusing to give them what they needed.
