I guess I never paid attention to the towing rating of my 95 Maxima SE 5-spd because at the time I either had a Ford F150 4WD or then a 2001 Pathfinder rated to tow 5000 lbs. Although, I did drive the Maxima flat out on road racing tracks (against the clock) besides parking lot slaloms and owned it for a month shy of 18 years. But long before that I had a 1983 Subaru 4WD wagon (only 73 hp, 4-spd manual) rated to tow 1000 lbs, that I used to tow a 1000 lb pop up tent camper, a lightweight duck boat, and sometimes a rented 4 x 8 ft trailer load of firewood which may have exceeded that. And once I even towed a Mercedes 240D with a tow rope across town when the diesel would not start in subzero weather.

It is possible that a car may not have solid enough mounting points for a hitch to pull a heavier trailer.

One thing that is important is to have the trailer balanced for proper tongue weight, typically 10% of trailer weight (~100 lbs for a 1000 lb trailer). While it may be possible to adjust that for a heavier trailer by adjusting the load, that does put weight on the rear of the vehicle and reduces it in the front. One time while pulling the 1000 lb camper with the light weight Subaru, in a driving rain I started to spin my front wheels just driving along the highway and had to use 4WD (which you do not have).

You also likely do not have sufficient transmission (and probably no oil cooling) for much of a heavier trailer. My F150 had a trailer towing package with oil cooler and I imagine that the Pathfinder did too (it had existing mount points for a Class III hitch).

I don't know if the Maxima had a CVT then. If you have a regular automatic it is generally recommended to use drive instead of overdrive while towing a trailer.

The "Worst case scenario" is not a question of 'Mechanical endurance' but of 'Human life'.

So, Don't take any chances towing. Get the right vehicle to do the job.

The REAL problem with overloading your car's towing capacity is the BRAKES. Your car was not designed to have all that extra weight loaded on to the rear. That extra 1500 lbs of "stuff" PLUS the weight of the trailer itself puts a lot more stress on your car's suspension, AND makes it more difficult to slow down quickly in an emergency situation. You're just looking for trouble.

You may overheat the engine, blow a head gasket or even have structural problems if the load exceeds the rating of the tow ball. You should never tow more than your vehicle's rating. Your vehicle becomes dangerous and not roadworthy, invlidatinyour insurance which may be a problem if you kill or permanently disable someone. If you have a load to carry, rent a truck, van or other appropriate vehicle.

Hi burning out an engine is possible. having the clutch or torque converter wrecked.

You can overheat your tranny, or your engine oil, etc. Go to your local moving and storage place and have them weigh your vehicle
