Mosin Nagant has pitting on the out side of barrel.?

I just bought a mosin. Took it apart to clean all the cosmoline off of it. Fount that the outside of the mosin barrel has pitting. The inside looks great. Id rather not get a new barrel if i can avoid it because all of me serial numbers match.

Lots of old military rifles have superficial pitting under the wood. If it has a good bore and otherwise looks good, just put it back together and don't worry about it. It's actually kind of fun to look up what all the inspection marks mean that you find when you take them apart for cleaning.

I bought a Mosin Nagant once. I cleaned it. It was old. Then I took a poop.

Unless it has really deep pitting, then it should be good to go. That aside, matching numbers only matter for sake of collector's value. Be glad its on the outside and not the inside.

It's OLD - and that pitting is often found on those. I'd be real reluctant to go shoot it - that pitting may be much worse than it looks, and the thing bursting in your hands would really really spoil your day!

No problem if you don't mind the medical examiner having to pull lumps of shrapnel out of your corpses face and body.

When the barrel explodes in to bits!

It's a cosmetic issue and won't effect the way the gun shoots. You can also fix a lot of damage like that if you are careful. I used to buy pistols with cosmetic issues like pits, scratches and worn blueing and refinish them.

Lots of old guns have pitting. Don't feel special.

*yawn* That was a pretty boring story.

This is where you're supposed to ask questions.

Example: Do you have any idea what a question is? <----<< THAT was a question. Keep trying... it's not real hard.

I'll just bet you consider yourself to be under-paid and over-worked. Don't you? <----<< Yep, another question.

pitting on the outside of the barrel will have zero effect on shooting it
