You are referring to Sister Act from 1992. Whoopi Goldberg was the lead as a lounge singer named Deloris van Cartiey on the run from her married boyfriend who was a mob boss. In witness protection, she was placed in a convent as a "nun" under the name of Sister Mary Clarence. When her musical talent became evident, she was placed in charge of the woefully inadequate convent choir but turned them into a Level One Prime A choir that went on tours and made recordings for which they won awards. They earned the highest accolades. And she (finally) earned the approval and affection from stodgy, stuffy and formal disapproving Mother Superior, an underrated performance by supporting actor Maggie Smith.
The sequel was Sister Act: Back in the Habit. Sister Delores returned to save the failing convent's school from closing and resumed and picked up her baton and approached the conductor's podium to mentor her new students and protégés, who won first prize at a competition.
